Endorphine spice up the charts with their sizzling single Student Weekly - 21 June
2004 A few months ago, talking about endorphins wouldnt have been a very popular way to break the ice at a party. You might have received a puzzled frown from your would-be friends, or, even worse, you might have reluctantly ended up in a conversation with an all-too-eager psychology major explaining the pain-killing power of this chemical substance. But times have changed. A few months on and a No 1 hit single later have made Endorphine the talk of the music town. With the chart-topping debut single Phuean Sanit (Best Friend), Thanida Thamwimon (Da), 18, Anucha Boethongkhamkul (Kia), 21, and the Amornmanus brothers, Thapaphol (Bomb), 20, and Thanat (Bird), 18, have shot to fame. FORMING THE BAND But with only drums and guitars, it wasnt much of a band at least not one that could compete in any of the band competitions that make or break wannabe stars. They needed a lead vocalist, and thats when Da came in. Impressed with Das unique and powerful voice, the band asked her to join. Since we played rock music, we never thought our lead singer would be a girl, Bomb said. But when we heard Da sing, we knew she was the missing piece. They were almost set, but there was still one other thing they needed the right name. Stuck in traffic one day, Bomb spotted a bumper sticker that had the word endorphine written on it [Student Weekly and most dictionaries spell the word as endorphin]. Curious, Bomb looked the word up and found the perfect name for his band. Endorphins are a chemical substance produced by the brain when were happy or in pain, Bomb said. And we want people to be happy listening to our songs. Hence the name Endorphine. THE SPICE OF LIFE They got their musical break when they were making a demo at the recording studio. A producer from BullDog who owns the studio was impressed with the bands talent and determination and asked them to join the record label. After a year of hard work and practice, Endorphine released their debut album. In contrast to their sophisticated band name, Endorphine went for a simple album title, Prik (Chilli). Chillies come in various kinds and colours, just like our album, which offers different moods and styles of songs, Da said. And the styles do vary. Dok Mai Ra Tri (Night Flower), for example, has a mixture of Thai and Japanese sounds with poetic lyrics, while Khor Wan Nueng (Give Me a Day) combines wind instruments with turntables. While making the album, the bands experience competing in music contests proved to be useful. But the tough professional world requires more than just raw talent. We had to push ourselves to practise harder, said Bird, the winner of the best bass player award at One-2-Call Extreme Music Contest. Ive gained valuable experience and learned new techniques from my producers. The band also contributed one song to the album. Proe Ther (Because Of You), originally called Nam Ta (Tears), was composed and written before the One-2-Call Extreme Music Contest and won the best song award. But in the end, the producers decided to ditch the old lyrics and kept only the songs melody. Our original lyrics were too sorrowful, Da said. Our producers decided to make it more optimistic.
