Ready to Rock
Beau goes for a new look on her fifth album
Student Weekly - 9 May
2004
Story by Suwitcha Chaiyong,
It’s never easy when somebody
famous tries to change their image. Whether it is from bad boy to
leading man, sexy temptress to good-hearted choirgirl or even something
simpler, fans have a hard time seeing their idols as anything other
than they have come to know.
For most of her career,
singer Sunita Leetikul (Beau) has been known as a sweet and romantic
pop diva, known for her slow, sweet ballads. Well no more. Beau says
she’s ready to rock — pop rock that is.
“I told everyone in a meeting
that I want to rock,” Beau said. “I don’t want to be sweet anymore.
I can be sweet, but when I’m on stage, because of all the slow songs,
I just stand there and don’t get to dance. I also know that my fans
liked my debut album, Beau (1996) — a pop rock album — as much as
I did. If everyone likes it, why not just do it.”
So after two years of waiting,
Beau is back with her fifth album, the pop rock number Enjoy.
WORTH WAITING FOR
Beau’s last album was Rak Ying Yai Jak Chai Khon Nueng (A Great Love
from a Man), the 2001 release from Grammy subsidiary RPG. It seems
RPG is stocked with artists and that Beau had been waiting and waiting
to record her new album.
But Beau grew tired of
waiting and moved to another Grammy baby, Music Cream, in order to
get things moving. “I waited to make my album for so long that I was
getting bored,” she admitted. “My management team let me to move to
Music Cream, so now I have my new album.”
The spotlight can be a
fickle thing, with the public often falling into out-of-sight-out-of-mind
philosophy. But Beau said she is confident her fans will be loyal,
despite the long wait for a new album. “There was no pressure at all
to create Enjoy because I already have my own fans,” she said. “But
will Enjoy reach a bigger audience or not? I don’t know yet.”
NOTHING PERSONAL
Along with going back to her pop rock roots, Beau has tried her hand
at writing a song and working on the vocal design for the new album.
She wrote the song “Chak Lom Haijai (From My Breath).”
“Even though it was the
second time I wrote a song, it was still very hard,” Beau said. “I
wrote five different sets of lyrics, and it took me about a month
to do it. My team voted and decided on the final lyrics. We found
it went well with its tune.”
Now that she is entering
the world of songwriting, it’s only fair to wonder whether her songs
are just fiction or if they have their roots in her real life, perhaps
her relationship with actor Fanden Janyatanakone?
“No songs are written about
my love life,” she said. “I know how to separate my work and personal
life.”
What, then, is her inspiration?
“The lyrics came after I listened to the melody,” Beau said. “I heard
strong beats at the middle of the song, so I introduced the story
at the beginning and left the really powerful emotional stuff for
the middle.”
Even though she was looking
for something a bit edgier with the new album,
Beau’s first hit single
is still a sweet, slow song. “Tha Ther Prom Chan Kor Prom (If You’re
Ready, I’m Ready)” is currently number 2 on the MTV Thailand chart.
She may never fully erase
her image as a romantic crooner, but with her new album Beau may not
be far away from getting to rock out on stage as she always dreamed
of.

| | awan_86@homail.com | 02-28-2005 00:37 [E,W] | | No one can replaced her. That's my comments. I've been hearing her song since I'm 12 years old. Right now I'm 19 and I'm still listening to her song. She have the most beautiful voice that I can hardly find in any artist in Thailand music industry. I hear that you were married this year. Congratulations and hope u live happily ever after. @>>-- | | gary price | 01-28-2005 05:36 [E,W] | Beau the girl becomes Beau the woman. Sunita tangos with The Cure and Blur in a taut, pumping gem. Breathy, ringing vocals, searing guitar breaks. The tigress makes Love and The Jungle holds it's breath. I've played Beau every day in England for six years now. My little girl insists on Beau in the car-and knows the lot! What Fly couldn't dream of being. What Parn very nearly was. Loso never grew as they got bigger. Sunita and her Garuda bird of a band soar on. All Love XXX | | Nat | 12-09-2004 13:33 [E,W] | | Good luck to P'Beau and her marriage with Lek. I love your songs so much.... I think you are the best Thai female singer. I love you voice and your songs. YOu are original not like any other Thai girls out there..... You don't have to show skin and you are still the best out there! Keep up the good work and continue to sing for us! | | 11-29-2004 21:59 [E,W] | | Beau is getting married to her long time boyfriend Lek FunDee or was it FunDen. | | none3 | 11-29-2004 14:53 [E,W] | | Beau, I give you props for everything. You have the best voice out of all the woman singers in Thailand. Your voice is different from the rest and your beat is so lively and different. Please, more albums!!! I will support all of your music and tell my friends to listen to you. | | jenny | 10-13-2004 16:06 [E,W] | Beau, i am one of your biggest fan ever. you are my one Idol, ever since i was little. i listen to your songs all the time, just in-order to go through life. i dont know what i would have done without you.
